MBB: A Game of Runs, Seawolves Fall Short to Kickoff Road Trip against Chico State

CHICO, CALIF. – On Thursday, February 2nd, the Sonoma State men's basketball team dropped a hard fought contest against CCAA rival Chico State, 77-90. The Seawolves would control the game early and hold a lead for nearly the entire first 20-minutes of action before the Wildcats would close the half on a momentous 11-0 run, giving them an 8-point lead at the break.

To start the second half, Chico State would hit a pair of three pointers to grow their lead to as many as 11, but head coach Rich Shayewitz and his group would answer with a 7-0 run of their own including a three ball from Pierce Rexford, to cut the deficit to just four.

After the Wildcats would get a bucket to end the scoring run, SSU would keep the momentum going with another 7-0 run including a three ball from Rexford and a layup inside from Dillon Iyawe, making just a two-point game.

The Wildcats lead would remain under double digits for the majority of the half, but every time Sonoma State grabbed a bucket and started to gain momentum, Chico State would find an answer of their own and hold their lead. With time running out, the Seawolves would resort to intentionally fouling the Wildcats to stop the clock, but they would go a perfect 10-10 from the stripe in the final two minutes to seal the 13-point victory.

Jaylen Wells and Austin Fadal would put up solid numbers and combine for 40 points on the night, while junior sharp shooter Pierce Rexford would continue his hot hand from beyond the arc, knocking down 4 three pointers and finishing with 12 points of his own. Dillon Iyawe would finish as the fourth Seawolf in double figures, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds, his second straight double-double.
