LOS ANGELES – The Sonoma State women's basketball team erased a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to lead in the final minute before Cal State LA's 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left gave the Eagles a 61-58 victory. The Seawolves, who clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament last weekend moved to 12-9 in conference play and 15-12 overall.
LA got off to a fast start, scoring the first five points and leading 10-4 in the opening minutes.
Amanda Luckett scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 13-10 and
Camille Johnson's free-throws in the final minute ended the first at 14-12.
The Seawolves took control in the second, breaking a 16-16 tie with a 12-3 run to lead by as many nine. Luckett and
Cielo Gonzalez each recorded a basket plus the free-throw and
Alli McDonald capped off the run with jumper.
Taylor Johnson later drained a triple but the Eagles closed on a 9-2 run to make it 33-31 at the break.
The third was all Cal State LA as they scored the first eight points of the quarter and extended their advantage to as many as 11.
Emerson Herrmann, Gonzalez and McDonald all scored baskets while
Taylor Johnson sank two freebies in the final seconds to cut it to nine points.
McDonald opened the fourth with four straight points and Luckett added two free-throws to get the Seawolves within six. A few possessions later
Kianna Maldia hit a 3-pointer and the margin was down to three. Luckett cut it to one on the next possession but the Eagles scored the next four to push it back to a five-point lead with under three minutes remaining.
Sonoma State had one final push in them, scoring the next six points and leading 58-57 into the final minute. McDonald scored the first four of the run on free-throws and a layup and
Jayme Blackard put the Seawolves ahead with a layup with 1:07 remaining. The Eagles tied the game on their next possession with a free-throw and then forced a SSU turnover on the next. Yesenia Smith then delivered the big shot, sinking a corner 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining. The Seawolves could not get a shot on their final chance and the Eagles walked away with the win.
Luckett led the Seawolves with 13 points and 9 rebounds with McDonald adding 12 points and 7 rebounds. Gonzalez tacked on 9 points and also grabbed 5 rebounds.
Sonoma State closes out their regular season campaign on Saturday when they head south to place Cal State San Marcos.
