WBB: Seawolves Topple No. 18 Cal State San Marcos in Regular Season Finale

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team put in exclamation point on their final regular season contest, going on the road and taking down no. 18 ranked Cal State San Marcos 67-59. The Seawolves close out CCAA play with a 13-9 record and will be the no. 6 seed in next weeks Conference Tournament.

The first five minutes of the game where back-and-forth with Amanda Luckett scoring the first six SSU points to see the game leveled at 8-8.  The Cougars scored the next eight points before Camille Johnson ended the run with a basket.  After the margin was pushed to nine Cielo Gonzalez netted the final score of the quarter to send it to the second with Sonoma State down 19-12.

The Seawolves took control in the second, quickly tying the game at 21-21 with back-to-back 3-pointers from Alli McDonald.  Later, Sonoma State scored on five consecutive possessions to close the half and took a 32-26 lead into halftime.  Camille Johnson started the run before Kianna Maldia picked up a steal and layup to put the Seawolves ahead.  McDonald followed with two straight buckets and Jayme Blackard ended the period with a triple.

Luckett opened the third with a basket and Taylor Johnson sank a 3-pointer to see the margin swell to 11 just a few minutes into the quarter.  After the Cougars cut it to seven, Camille Johnson scored again and McDonald hit another three ball and the lead was 12.  San Marcos answered right back with a 14-3 run to get all the way back within one before Camille Johnson and Gonzalez each scored to get it back to five.

The Seawolves led by three heading into the fourth and held the Cougars off for the final ten minutes.  Sonoma State opened the fourth with a basket by Luckett but saw San Marcos get back within two at the halfway point of the quarter.  Leading by three as the final minute approached, McDonald hit a clutch mid-range jumper to push it back to five.  Gonzalez then iced the game from the free-throw line, hitting four straight in the final minute to seal it.

The win against a ranked opponent was the program's first since 2019.  McDonald led the way with a game high 20 points and 9 rebounds.  She shot 8 of 13 from the field and hit 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.  Gonzalez added 17 and Luckett finished with 11 to give her four straight games in double figures.  Camille Johnson tacked on 9 big points off the bench.
