SB: Seawolves Make it 12 Straight with Sweep of Stanislaus State

NOVATO, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team earned a pair of CCAA victories on Saturday, defeating Stanislaus State 6-2 and 4-2 to extend their winning streak to 12 games.  The Seawolves are now 13-1 on the season and lead the CCAA with a 7-0 conference mark.

SSU wasted little time getting on the board, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning of game 1 to take an early lead.  Anna Zoia-Buescher led off with a bunt single and moved to second on an error.  Rylee Nishimoto followed with a walk and stole second before Giana Hays scored both on a single to left.

Nichole Sarra toed the rubber for the Seawolves in her first appearance since a perfect game last week.  She got through the first inning unscathed but allowed a run in the second and another in the fourth to see the game leveled at 2-2.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Sonoma State offense once again caught fire.  Reagan Hunt led off with a single and was followed by Zoia-Buescher and Nishimoto who both picked up infield hits to load the bases.  Hays delivered the big hit once again with a laser through the infield to score a pair.  She then stole second and three batters later Skylar Linnane plated two more with a single of her own to make it 6-2.

Sarra did the rest, retiring the final six batters in order to pick up her fifth victory of the season.  She now stands at 5-1 with a complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out two.  Hays led the way with two hits and four RBIs while Zoia-Buescher, Nishimoto and Linnane picked up two hits apiece.

The Warriors opened the series finale with a run in the top of the first off Seawolves' starter Bailee Reed.  They looked to add to it in the second, loading the bases with just one out but Reed pitcher her way out of the jam to keep it at 1-0.  The game moved to fourth still at 1-0 before Cassidy Romano ripped her second homerun of the season.  Her two-run shot put the Seawolves ahead 2-1 as the game moved to the fifth.

Stanislaus tied the game in the top of the fifth on a single and double before Reed got the final three outs to strand the go-ahead run in scoring position.  Zoia-Buescher then led off the bottom of the frame with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  She moved to third as Nishimoto reached on an error and then scored on a double steal on the next pitch.  Jordyn Martinez then followed with a perfect squeeze bunt to score Nishimoto and make it 4-2.

Reed shut the door from there, finishing off the complete game with a scoreless sixth and seventh.  She improved to 8-0 on the season and struck out five.  Zoia-Buescher and Nishimoto picked up two hits apiece with Romano driving in two runs on her homerun.

The Seawolves head south next week for a four-game series at Cal State San Bernardino.  All games can be streamed on the CCAA Network.
