SANTA ROSA, CALIF. - On Saturday, March 11th the Sonoma State baseball team fought off the rain and were able to get in one game against Cal State East Bay. The game would be moved off campus to Santa Rosa JC due to heavy morning rainfall as the Seawolves finally kicked off their conference regular season after a previous rainout with Cal Poly Pomona.
SSU saw some efficient pitching early on but the Pioneers offense came to play as they finished the game with 16 hits and a pair of runs in the 1st and 8th innings. The Seawolves had their chances though as they finished with just 4 hits and left a game high 10 runners on base, falling 6-2 in their conference opener.
FIRST INNING:
Sophomore right hander
Chase Banks would get his first start of the season and come out throwing strikes. Banks started the game throwing 23 strikes out of his first 25 pitches but the Pioneers matched that with 3 first inning hits.
A 1-out triple and a 2-out double would score a pair of early runs for East Bay as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Banks would finish his outing with 3.2 innings of work giving up 3 runs before departing to veteran right hander
Jake Dent.
6TH AND 7TH INNING:
After tacking on another run in the 3rd and 6th inning, the Pioneers took a 4-0 lead heading into the 6th inning. The Seawolves would finally breakthrough in the 6th and record just their second hit of the game.
Christopher Wright would smack a double off the left field foul pole to put runners on second and third.
Joey Loveless would then get credit for a sac fly to center to score
Kenny Decelle and get the Seawolves on the board.
After a 1,2,3 7th from Dent, Sonoma State would make some more noise in the bottom half with a clutch pinch hit RBI single from second year player
Niko Tejada. A pair of walks would force the Pioneers reliever to exit and load the bases with two outs. A dramatic 6-pitch at bat would end with a strikeout to end the inning. Tejada's RBI single would make it just a 2-run game.
FINAL SSU (2) vs. CSUEB (6):
After three scoreless innings from Dent, he would run into some trouble in the 8th and give up three straight hits including a 2-RBI double to extend East Bay's lead to 6-2. Dent would get a fly out to end the inning and conclude his outing with an effective 4.1 innings of work and a pair of strikeouts.
SSU's final 7 outs in the ballgame would come via the K as East Bay's third pitcher of the game would shut the door in the final two innings.
Left hander
Michael Panichi would come in and pitch a scoreless 9th to wrap up the pitching for Sonoma State.
Christopher Wright,
Daniel Monti and
Niko Tejada would have the three hits in the game for SSU.
