SB: Seawolves Sweep Cal State Monterey Bay Behind Potent Offense

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team recorded 13 hits in the first game and- Skylar Linnane produced two home runs in the second to pull off a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay 10-2 and 3-0.   The Seawolves improved to 18-4 overall and 12-3 in CCAA play after taking the series 3-1.

Sonoma State jumped on the Otters early and often in the day's opener, putting up four each in the first and second innings.  Anna Zoia-Buescher got thing started off CSUMB starter Cassie Gasper with a leadoff single.  Jordyn Martinez followed with a single to move Zoia-Buescher to third.  After Martinez stole second, Giana Hays delivered a two-run single to make it 2-0.  Cassidy Romano followed with a single of her own and later scored along with Hays on a single by Reagan Hunt to end the first at 4-0.

Zoia-Buescher led off the second with another single and Martinez once again followed with another hit.  Hays plated the first run of the inning with her second hit of the day and Courtney Jack added a run with an RBI groundout.  Hunt then tacked on her second two-run single in as many innings to make it 8-0.

Bailee Reed was in the circle for the Seawolves and kept the Otters off the board for the first two innings.  CSUMB picked up two runs in the bottom of the third but Reed closed out the inning and hurled a scoreless fourth to keep it at 8-2.  In the top of the fifth, SSU added two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Zoia-Buescher and a fielder's choice from Martinez.

Charlie Johnson came on in relief to finish off the game with a scoreless fifth, giving Reed her 10th victory of the season.  The Seawolves finished with 13 hits with Zoia-Buescher, Martinez and Hays collecting three apiece.  Hays also added three RBIs while Hunt tacked on two hits and four runs batter in.

The series finale featured Johnson back on the rubber and in control again.  The freshman hurled her first complete game shutout with a stellar performance to pick up her second win of the series.  Johnson finished the weekend with 14 scoreless innings of work.

Offensively, the game was quiet until the top of the fifth inning.  Linnane led off the frame and took an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for the game's first run.  The Seawolves added another in the sixth when Hays ripped a double into the corner to score Rylee Nishimoto who singled to open the inning.  The final run came in the seventh when Linnane delivered again, ripping a 3-2 pitch to left field once again for her second home run of the game.

The Seawolves return home next week to host Cal Poly Humboldt in a four-game series starting on Friday with a doubleheader.  All four games will be streamed on the CCAA Network and live stats are available at www.sonomaseawolves.com.
