SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. - On Saturday, April 1st, the Sonoma State baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with a 5-2 victory over the 5th ranked team in the country, Cal State San Bernardino. Timely hitting and a terrific complete game performance from junior right hander
Tanner Fonoti helped seal the win for SSU, their first win against a ranked opponent since 2020.
The Yotes put on an offensive clinic in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring 26 runs off 22 hits and recording 5+ runs in three different innings. The Seawolves were able to shake things off and take advantage of a great pitching performance from Fonoti to grab their 3rd conference win of the season. RBI's from
Shane Callison and
Joey Loveless would prove the difference maker as Fonoti held the Yotes to just 2 runs off 5 hits.
SSU 5-2 #5 CSUSB:
After two scoreless innings and retiring 6 of the first 7 batters from Fonoti to start the game, second year players
Christopher Wright and
Sean Pauly would each single to put two on with one out to start the 3rd inning. Freshman infielder
Shane Callison would step to the plate and jump on the first pitch he saw, lacing a double down the right field line to score Wright and Pauly.
Back-to-back homers from San Bernardino in the bottom half of the inning would quickly shift the momentum and tie things up at two a piece.
Joey Loveless would lead things off in the 4th though and quickly take back the momentum with a solo shot to left field on a tough full count, good for his second of the series. Loveless climbs his average to .262 and has recorded a hit in 5 of his last 6 games for the Seawolves.
Fonoti would continue to pitch to contact with effective location and get some solid defense behind him as he went on to retire 9 of the final 11 batters to secure his first career complete game and pitch a career high 7 innings. SSU would take advantage of a San Bernardino error in the 6th and tack on two more insurance runs with an RBI single from
Braeden Holliday and a sac fly from Wright, good for his 13th RBI of the season.
Fonoti would work around a 2-out walk in the 7th and end the game with his 3rd strikeout of the day, securing the 5-2 victory over the 5th ranked team in the country. The Seawolves last win over a ranked opponent came during the abbreviated 2020 season against the 4th ranked Tritons of UC San Diego at Seawolf Diamond.
