ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Saturday, April 22nd, the Sonoma State baseball team broke out for a 12-hit, 9-run performance to take game one of Saturday's doubleheader 9-3 over Cal State San Marcos.
Kenny Decelle and
Chris Ortiz would be responsible for the bulk of the damage, with a 3-run double from Decelle in the 2nd and a 3-run home run from Ortiz in the 5th to break things open.
In game two, the Seawolves would face off against the Cougars best starter and salvage just one run off six hits as they fell 3-1 to conclude Saturday's doubleheader. SSU would put runners on in the 6th and first baseman Chris Wright would pull a single through the right side to score the team's only run. The San Marcos starter would go six strong innings to earn the win and take a 2-1 series lead.
GAME ONE: SSU 9-3 CSUSM:
After surrendering an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd, the Seawolves would bounce back with a clutch two out double from first year outfielder
Kenny Decelle. Decelle would lace the 1-1 pitch into the left center gap and clear the bases, giving SSU a 3-1 lead. His 3-run double would go down as his 5th of the year as the junior outfielder has been one of the team's hottest hitters since returning from injury.
A pair of San Marcos runs in the 4th would knot things up at three but not before a big 3-run blast from catcher
Chris Ortiz in the 5th to retake a 6-3 SSU lead. A two out walk from
Braeden Holliday followed by a single from
Daniel Monti back up the middle set the stage for Ortiz. Ortiz would waste no time as he jumped on the first pitch and lined it over the left field fence for his team leading 5th homer of the season.
Sophomore right hander
Blake Janowicz would make his 7th start of the season and after battling through some early trouble, he would settle down to complete five solid innings, allowing just three runs on six hits and striking out three batters. With the 3-run 5th inning, Janowicz would depart in line for the win.
In would come veteran right hander
Ross Goldschlag who would put together a career performance in his 11th appearance of the season. Goldschlag would finish the game with four innings of perfect baseball, now allowing a single hit, walk, or run scored as the Seawolves went on to win 9-3. He would add a strikeout to his performance with just 44 total pitches.
An RBI single from Chris Wright and an RBI double from
Daniel Monti in the 6th would tack on another pair of runs for the Seawolves. Decelle, Hernandez, Holliday and Monti would all finish with two hits each in the game and Decelle and Ortiz would combine for 6 RBI's.
GAME TWO: SSU 1-3 CSUSM
In game two, junior right hander
Tanner Fonoti would make his team leading 9th start of the season as he came into the game as the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week for his complete game shutout last weekend against Cal State LA. Fonoti would have another solid start for the Seawolves but a costly error in the 4th would allow a run to score and then an RBI single in the 6th would give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
The Seawolves would string together three hits in the 6th and finally get on the board with a two out single from
Christopher Wright. That would go down as Wright's 21st RBI of the season, good for second most on the team. In the 7th, a two out single from
Lucas Townsend would give SSU some late life but a 7-pitch strikeout would end the game as San Marcos claimed a 2-1 series lead.
Mark Hernandez would continue his recent tear with another two hits in the game and Fonoti would complete all seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, and finish with five strikeouts. He leads all SSU pitchers with 30 strikeouts on the season.
