BSB: Dent Goes for Career High 7 Innings but Seawolves Fail to Capitalize, Drop Series Finale 3-0

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Sunday, April 23rd, the Sonoma State baseball team dropped the series finale 3-0 to Cal State San Marcos as the Cougars took the conference series three games to one. The Seawolves got a career performance from senior right hander Jake Dent who went seven strong innings allowing just two runs and striking out four batters. SSU was able to chase the Cougars starter in the 5th but they would go on to throw four additional pitchers to piece together a 7-hit shutout and secure the win.

Dent would allow three hits and get into some early trouble in the first, allowing two runs to come across and surrender an early 2-0 lead to San Marcos. After the first, Dent would find a terrific rhythm, retiring 18 of the next 21 batters he faced and not allowing a single run in the following six innings of play.

The Seawolves would start to string together some hits and apply pressure in the 5th, singles from Niko Tejada and Shane Callison would allow Kenny Decelle and pinch hitter Joey Loveless to have a crack at getting SSU on the scoreboard. The Cougars pitching staff would bare down and get a pop up and a ground out to end the threat and maintain their 2-0 lead.

The Seawolves would put runners on in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to continue their pressure but San Marcos would continue to rotate through their relief pitching and get out of jams. Sonoma State would leave a game high 7 batters on base and match San Marcos with 7 hits in the game. The Cougars would get a clutch two out RBI single in the 9th to add an insurance run but would not end up needing it as the Seawolves went down in order to drop the game 3-0.

Junior infielder Mark Hernandez continues his recent tear as he led the way with three hits on the day. Hernandez finished the series with 9 total hits and has climbed his average all the way to a team leading .345 on the year. Freshman infielder Shane Callison also added a pair of singles to follow Hernandez as the pair combined for five hits in the game. Senior Michael Benz would come in to pitch the 8th and 9th and allow just two hits and one run as Dent would get credit for the tough loss despite throwing a career high 7 innings.
