HAYWARD, Calif. – Head coach
Jennifer Bridges picked up her 500
th career victory in the second game of Friday's doubleheader as the Sonoma State softball team split a pair with Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves took the nightcap 6-1 after falling in the opener 4-2 and moved to 17-4 in the CCAA and 28-7 overall.
SSU started strong in the first game, scoring in the top of the first with
Anna Zoia-Buescher leading off the contest with a single. Two batter later
Jordyn Martinez doubled to score the first run of the game. The Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the frame off starter
Bailee Reed, using a walk, double and sacrifice fly to plate a pair of runs and take a 2-1 lead.
Reagan Hunt evened the game at 2-2 in the top of the second with a solo homerun to left.
The game remained tied at 2-2 into the fourth before Cal State East Bay recorded back-to-back homeruns and suddenly led 4-2. The Seawolves had their chances to get back into the game in the fifth, sixth and seventh, putting runners in scoring position in each inning but coming up empty handed.
Martinez and
Skylar Linnane finished with two hits apiece to lead the offense. Reed went 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
Charlie Johnson came on in relief with a scoreless 2.1 innings of work.
Johnson would toe the rubber for Sonoma State in the second game, bringing with her 62.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. She would continue her streak in the circle with six more scoreless frames before the Pioneers ended it with a run in the seventh. Johnson's streak ended with 69 straight innings without an earned run. Her ERA currently leads the conference at 0.28, allowing just three earned runs in 74.2 innings. Johnson also improved to 9-1 on the season.
Offensively the Seawolves once again opened the game with a quick run as Zoia-Buescher led off with a single. She moved her way to third and came into score on a sacrifice fly by
Giana Hays. The game stayed at 1-0 into the sixth when Hays and
Lauren Mirtoni delivered back-to-back doubles to make it a two-run contest. After a scoreless sixth from Johnson, Sonoma State broke the game open in the seventh.
Cassidy Romano tripled and scored on an error before Zoia-Buescher singled and scored on an error two batters later. Hays then came through once more, belting a two-run homerun to make it 6-0.
Hays led the way with two hits and three RBIs with Zoia-Buescher and Romano also recording two hits apiece.
Bridges's has complied a 455-243 record in her 13 seasons at Sonoma State while adding 45 wins in two seasons at Whittier College to reach the 500-win milestone. She is now just 22 wins away from passing Paul King in program wins at 479.
