HAYWARD, Calif. – The No. 15 ranked Sonoma State softball used four homeruns on their way to a 11-0 and 4-1 sweep of Cal State East Bay on Saturday. The Seawolves pounded out 24 hits and had three pitchers combine for just one run allowed as they improved to 19-4 in the CCAA and 30-7 overall.
SSU exploded in the top of the first in the opener, putting eight runs on the board and sending twelve batters to the plate. A walk, followed by single by
Jordyn Martinez and
Lauren Mirtoni loaded the bases with just one down.
Cassidy Romano then stepped up and belted a grand slam over the left field fence for a 4-0 lead. The next batter
Skylar Linnane made it back-to-back big flies with a solo shot, her third of the season.
Courtney Jack followed with a double and
Reagan Hunt singled to give the Seawolves two runners on base.
Anna Zoia-Buescher drove in the sixth run with a single and then pulled off a double steal with Hunt to make it a 7-0 game. The final run scored on a double by
Giana Hays to give
Charlie Johnson an eight-run cushion.
Linnane and Jack tacked on another run in the second with back-to-back doubles while Johnson hurled two scoreless innings in the circle.
Bailee Reed came on in relief to start the third and quickly worked a scoreless frame. The Seawolves added another in the fourth on an RBI single by Linnane and the final run came in the fifth on a solo blast by Hays.
Reed closed out the game, finishing with three scoreless innings and improving to 12-3 on the season. Romano finished with a homerun, four RBIs and a steal while Hays fell just a single short of the cycle with a double, triple and homer. Linnane and Jack picked up three hits apiece.
The Seawolves used more stellar pitching in the series finale as
Nichole Sarra and
Charlie Johnson combined to limit the Pioneers to just one run in a 4-1 win. Romano got the offense started with another long ball, this time a solo shot in the top of the second for her fifth homer of the year. After CSUEB tied the game in the bottom of the frame, Sonoma State took the lead for good in the third. Hunt led off with a double and scored on a single by Zoia-Buescher to make it 2-1.
The fourth would see the Seawolves add another with Romano singling, then stealing second before taking third and home on wild pitches. Hunt added the final run in the sixth with a single through the right side. Sarra went 4.2 innings before Johnson came on to close out the game with a scoreless 2.1 innings of work to earn the save.
Sarra picked up the win to move to 9-3 on the season while four different Seawolves recorded two hits apiece. Zoia-Buescher, Hays, Romano and Hunt all finished with two hits with Romano adding a homerun and two steals.
The Seawolves return home next week for their final homestand, a four-game series against Chico State. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday before hosting Senior Day on Saturday with the final two games.
