ROHNERT PARK – The Sonoma State women's soccer team started their 2023 campaign on Thursday afternoon with a tough test against No. 22 ranked UC Colorado Springs. The Seawolves used a tough defensive effort and a couple of big saves from goalkeeper
Claudia Janese to earn the 0-0 tie.
The two battled for 90 minutes with neither able to break through with a score. The Mountain Lions nearly took an early advantage with a shot from distance but Janese got a glove on the ball to keep it scoreless. She would make another leaping save in the 27
th minute, pushing the ball over the bar. The game moved to the half with UCCS holding a 6-2 shot advantage.
The Seawolves offense was more active in the second half, recording five shots, the same as the visitors. Neither team threatened to score until the final five minutes when each nearly got on the board. In the 86
th minute the Mountain Lions high press forced a turnover and a shot from outside the box hit off the crossbar. It bounced back in front of the net where a header Fie Steenberg headed for the far post. Janese raced across the goal and made a diving save before it could cross the goal line.
Sonoma State had the final chance, in the 90
th minute with back-to-back corner kicks. On the second
Ashley Frye knocked a ball towards the goal that was cleared off the line by a UCCS defender and out to safety.
Janese made five saves to earn the clean sheet in her Sonoma State debut. Frye led the team with two shots.
The Seawolves are back in action next Thursday when they host Azusa Pacific at Seawolf Soccer Field at 11:30 am.
