SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. - On Thursday, September 14th, the Sonoma State men's soccer team recorded their second straight shutout in a 1-0 victory over PacWest member Dominican. Redshirt freshman
Jack Chapman got the start in goal once again and would get credit for his second shutout this season while making three saves in the contest. In the 51st minute, sophomore winger
Jvon Cunningham would smash home a stellar free kick from a tight angle outside the box to give SSU the 1-0 lead. The Seawolves would hang on with some solid defense to pick up their second win of the season.
FINAL SSU 1-0 DOMINICAN
Sonoma State would get out shot 10-6 in the game but put together a solid defensive performance to make things difficult for the Penguins all game long. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Jack Chapman made his second start in goal after coming in to play the second half against Saint Martin's last weekend. Chapman has not looked back since as he has combined for 180 minutes and 10 saves in goal for the Seawolves.
The entire back line for SSU would play all 90 minutes and put together one of their best defensive performances of the season.
Elliot Stanley,
Ian Reis,
Lucas English and
Johnnie Dodge would make up the back line for the Seawolves. Offensively, freshman midfielder
Alejandro Zarate would record his third start of the season and tally two shots in his 57 minutes of action.
Sean Rohane,
Jvon Cunningham and
Johnnie Dodge would each record a shot to make up the team's six shots in the game.
Cunningham would prove to be the difference maker for the Seawolves in the 52nd minute after forward
Oliver Ziemer would draw a foul just outside the box. The free kick would occur deep on the side of the 18-yard box just five yards from the endline. Cunningham would step up alone to take the free kick and catch everyone off guard with a whipped shot on goal. The attempt would creep just under the crossbar and past the Penguins keeper as Cunningham would sprint to the Seawolves bench to celebrate with his teammates. His team leading third goal of the season would go down as an early goal of the year candidate and represent the game winner as SSU would hang on for the 1-0 victory.
