VB: Seawolves Sweep No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino in CCAA Opener

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – What a way to open CCAA play!  The Sonoma State volleyball team ripped off their fifth straight win with a sweep of No. 10 rank Cal State San Bernardino 25-23, 25-22 and 25-22.  The Seawolves moved to 6-2 on the season with their second win over the Coyotes in the last week.

SSU found themselves down early in the match falling behind in the first set at CSUSB looked to be on their way to an easy win.  The Yotes led by eight several times throughout the set, including at 23-15 before an incredible ten unanswered points by the Seawolves.  The run was spurred by Jen Trephan, Emily Hernandez and Jaden Krist as they combined for nearly every point.  Trephan served the final nine points of the set while Krist finished with three kills and two blocks.  Hernandez added two kills and two blocks during the run.  The set winner came on a kill by Krist to put Sonoma State ahead 25-23.

The Seawolves delivered another comeback in the second set but in slightly less dramatic fashion.  CSUSB led 13-9 before a 7-1 run put SSU on top for good.  Krist recorded two kills during the run and Dylan Copeland kept the Coyotes on their back heels with strong serves.  San Bernardino would later tie the score at 17-17 but a kill by Brooklyn Jackson and a kill and an ace by Krist put the Seawolves back on top.  The final two points were scored on serving errors by CSUSB to make it 2-0.

Sonoma State went for the sweep in the third set and started hot, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage.  Trephan notched three straight aces during the run but the Yotes were far from out of it.  The visitors came all the way back to take the lead several times before the teams found themselves tied at 17-17.  Trephan then once again came up big with her serve, recording two more aces, giving her five for the set while Hernandez tacked on two kills.  The contest moved to match-point at 24-22 when Leilani Hallman capped off the sweep with a kill.

The Seawolves dominated the attack with a 45-26 kill advantage, including 17 in the opening set and added ten aces.  Krist led the way with ten kills while Hallman and Hernandez finished with nine kills apiece in the middle and both hit over .500.  Trephan added 22 assists and a match high five aces.

Sonoma State has now won three in a row over CSUSB dating back to last season.  The Seawolves will look to continue their hot play on Saturday when they host San Francisco State in The Wolves' Den at 3:00 pm.  Live stream and live stat links can be found at www.sonomaseawolves.com.
