CHICO, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball continued their winning ways on Friday evening, toppling Chico State in four sets for their seventh consecutive victory. The Seawolves improved to 8-2 on the season and are now 3-0 in CCAA play.
The match did not start off well for SSU as the Wildcats broke away at the end of the first set. The Seawolves led 18-15 but Chico State ripped off a 10-3 run to overtake the lead and put away the set at 25-21.
Sonoma State regained control in the second set, using nine straight points to jump out to a 13-5 advantage.
Brooklyn Jackson recorded three kills during the 9-0 run with
Leilani Hallman and
Kiana Richardson adding one apiece. The attack continued to rack up kills throughout the rest of the set with Richardson adding two more and
Jaden Krist tacking on two of her own. The Seawolves notched 15 kills in the set with just one error and hit .368 in the 25-13 win.
SSU was even better in the third set, hitting over .400 with 14 kills and again just one error. Richardson helped the Seawolves break open the set with a 10-3 run to turn a 7-4 lead into a 17-7 advantage. Richardson recorded three kills during the run and Krist added two more to cap off the run. Krist put two more on the board and Hallman got set-point on a kill of her own to end the set at 25-15.
The Seawolves continued their strong attack in the clinching set with another 15-kill performance. Once again, they used a big run, this time 12 unanswered points to storm past the Wildcats. Trailing 6-4, SSU scored the next 12 to make it a 16-6 on multiple kills by Richardson and Krist. Five different Seawolves recorded kills in the final nine points as they would cruise to a 25-13 win.
Sonoma State dominated the statistical categories in the match, leading 54-32 in kills, 8-4 in aces and 11-3 in blocks. Krist led all players with 16 kills with Richardson and Jackson also reaching double figures with 15 and 10 respectively.
Jen Trephan turned in another fantastic all-around match with 5 kills, 27 assists, 14 digs, 5 blocks and 4 aces. Reigning CCAA Defensive Player of the Week
Riley Beyma recorded a match high 19 digs.
