ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team did not get off to the hot start to CCAA play they were hoping for, falling to Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 on Friday afternoon. The Seawolves controlled the pace throughout and held the shot advantage but one perfectly placed second half shot from the 'Yotes proved to be all that was needed.
The game was a defensive battle from the start with eight total shots in the first half.
Jenna Dean and
Malia Falk both recorded early shots before CSUSB took the next two, just a couple minutes apart.
Claudia Janese stopped both with relative ease to keep the game scoreless.
Renee Ketner notched the next two Seawolves attempts and
Luna Chavez put another on goal late in the half but was turned away.
Sonoma State came out strong in the second half, registering their two best chances of the contest in the first five minutes. The Seawolves drew a foul right outside the box to set up the first attempt.
Julia Betti took the free kick and put it just over the bar. Three minutes later Ketner's shot from outside the box sailed just wide. The game turned in the 77
th with a perfect shot from Unieque Solis from right outside the box. Solis took the ball to her right foot and shot it across the goal and into the upper left corner for her second score of the season.
The Seawolves pressed for the final 13 minutes of the contest but could not register a clean look at the goal. SSU held an 8-5 shot advantage in the contest but managed just one shot on target. Janese made three stops in net.
Sonoma State is back at it again on Sunday afternoon when they host Cal Poly Pomona for another CCAA clash. Kick-off will be at 2:00 pm, immediately following the men's contest.
