TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball team used a 45-point second half to overcome a double-digit deficit in a 68-54 victory over Stanislaus State. The win improved the Seawolves to 9-5 on the season and now sit at 4-3 in CCAA play.
SSU took control of the game early, holding the Warriors scoreless for the first 5 minutes of action while building a 9-0 lead.
Alli McDonald opened the scoring with the game's first basket and
Madisyn Clark added a 3-pointer and a jumper. Stanislaus closed the first on an 8-2 run as the Seawolves led 11-9 after the opening quarter.
The Warriors came out strong in the second quarter, scoring 18 straight points in the first five minutes to open up 15-point advantage. Trailing 33-18, Sonoma State scored the final five points of the half to get the margin down to ten at the break. Clark hit a key corner 3-pointer in the final minute.
Sonoma State took over the game in the second half with a fantastic showing on both the offensive and defensive end. After the Warriors opened the third with a basket to get the lead back to a dozen, the Seawolves went to work.
Jennifer Moreno hit a jumper and a 3-pointer before McDonald and
Jayme Blackard added two more buckets to cap off a 9-0 run. Stanislaus took a 40-34 lead with just under four minutes remaining but that would prove to be their last advantage. SSU ripped off a 13-0 run over the final 3:30 seconds. Blackard and
Sheriene Arikat started the run with back-to-back baskets and
Ixchel Rojo drained a triple to put the Seawolves on top 41-40. McDonald then closed the third with a three of her own to send the game to the fourth at 47-40.
The scoring run continued into the final period with
Eryn Gardner hitting a 3-pointer and Blackard converting a layup to complete the 18-0 run. The Seawolves kept the Warriors at arm's length from there with Arikat making back-to-back baskets and the team hitting 10 of 12 from the free-throw line in the quarter.
The Seawolves were dominant in the second half, shooting 56% from the field and hitting 13 free-throws. For the game they shot 42% while holding the Warriors to just 32%.
McDonald recorded another double-double, her 7
th of the season with a 15-point, 12-rebound performance. Blackard added 11 while Clark and Moreno scored 8 apiece. Gardner and Arikat gave big contributions off the bench, combining for 13 points.
Sonoma State will remain on the road next week as they head down to Southern California to take on Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Thursday's game against the Broncos will tip at 5:30 pm with live stream available on the CCAA Network.
