POMONA, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball did it again on Thursday night, erasing a double digit second half deficit to pull out a 61-58 win over Cal Poly Pomona. The Seawolves improved to 10-5 overall on the season and upped their CCAA record to 5-3.
The game started slow with the Broncos scoring the first four points and leading 4-0 after three minutes. SSU answered back with a 3-point barrage as
Madisyn Clark bookended a triple by
Alli McDonald with a pair of threes to cap off a 9-0 run. McDonald added another basket in the first and
Jennifer Moreno scored the final five with a jumper and a 3-pointer to put the Seawolves ahead 16-9 after the opening quarter.
Sonoma State struggled to score in the second with CPP opening the second with an 8-0 run and eventually took a 28-22 lead into halftime after closing with nine straight points. The Broncos continued to extend their lead in the third and took an 11-point advantage with just under 3 minutes remaining in the period. From there the Seawolves answered back in a big way. McDonald started the run with a jumper and
Sheriene Arikat followed with a 3-pointer. Two possessions later, Clark ended the third with another 3-pointer to close the quarter on a 10-0 run and send the game to the fourth with the Seawolves trailing by just one.
Laura Smith and
Jayme Blackard combined for the first six SSU points in the fourth to put the Seawolves back on top 45-44. Clark followed with her fourth 3-pointer of the contest and a couple minutes later Blackard sank a triple of her own to make it a 6-point contest. The Broncos chipped the margin down to one with under 3 minutes left but SSU once again had an answer. McDonald hit a clutch 3-pointer to push it back to four in the final minutes. CPP pulled within one in the final seconds before Smith sank a free-throw to make it a 2-point contest. On the next possession the Seawolves forced a turnover and McDonald made a freebie to push the lead up to three. They got one last stop on the final possession to seal the win.
The Seawolves controlled this game from the 3-point line, knocking down 11 triples and shooting 50% from behind the arc. McDonald led the way once again with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Clark also reached double figures with 12 points on 4 of 7 from long distance. Blackard tacked on 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists while Moreno finished with 8 points off the bench.
