Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lek-Miro’s Stunner in the 89th Minute Lifts Seawolves past Cal State San Marcos

The Sonoma State Seawolves women's soccer team kicked off their conference play with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field. In a tightly contested match that remained scoreless for most of the game, it was sophomore midfielder Marivic Lek-Miro who emerged as the hero, netting the winning goal in the 89th minute to move the Seawolves to 3-2-3 overall on the season.

The Seawolves dominated possession in the first half, outshooting the Cougars 5-2 and forcing Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Allison Marcure to make three crucial saves. The second half saw a more action from the visitors but the SSU defense held strong, turning away attacks and clearing corner kick opportunities from the Cougars.  The Seawolves limited CSUSM to just two shots on goal for the game, one in each half.

As the clock wound down and a draw seemed imminent, the Seawolves made one final push. In the 89th minute, Luna Chavez played a perfect ball over the defense to Lek-Miro on the left side.  She took a few touches and launched a left footed shot as two defenders closed in.  The shot cleared the leaping goalie and tuck into the upper right corner for Lek-Miro's second goal of the season.

Seawolves goalkeeper Ariana Beddoes recorded her third shutout of the season, making two saves to preserve the clean sheet. The win extends the Seawolves unbeaten streak to six as they are 3-0-3 with just three goals allowed in their last six matches.

Sonoma State is back in action at Seawolf Soccer Field on Sunday when they host Cal State East Bay at 11:30 am.  Live stream and stats are available on www.sonomaseawolves.com.
