ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- Sonoma State Women's Basketball has begun to find its stride thanks to winning their third straight game and moving to 2-0 in conference play. Thanks to timely contributions across the entire roster the Seawolves dug deep and pulled out another gritty win on their home court. With three wins in a row, they now turn their attention to the visiting Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona as they look to improve their CCAA record to 3-0.
The team's defense was once again critical in securing a victory. Across the 40 minutes of game time they held the Coyotes to 33% shooting from the floor and completely took the three point shot away as San Bernardino could only muster a 17.6% from deep. They also swiped nine steals and five blocks. Jayme Blackard, Sienna Cherwinski, Eryn Gardner and Jennifer Moreno all posted two steals with Gardner and Cherwinski also blocking shots.
Sonoma also won the rebounding battle in convincing fashion pulling down 39 boards, 10 of them offensive. Paige Pentzer and Eryn Gardner were dominant on the glass as they combined for 15 rebounds. Pentzer did a great job locking down the paint in her 20 minutes of playing time while also earning multiple trips to the free throw line with a perfect 4-4 display from the charity stripe.
Another huge boost to the Seawolves came via Jennifer Moreno who provided a great spark in the second unit. Moreno's nine points were huge buckets including a buzzer beating step back jumper and a near perfect 5-6 from the free throw line. Moreno has been invaluable over the past few games with her shot making and ball handling.
Overall, 11 Seawolves recorded at least two points and nine players grabbed at least two rebounds. This team oriented approach to scoring, rebound and defending has helped the Seawolves kickstart a winning streak and has moved them to a 2-0 record in the CCAA!
