SAN FRANCISCO –
Trena Rathjen got going early and often on her way to a career high 21 points as the Sonoma State women's basketball team earned a 71-46 win over San Francisco State. The victory moved the Seawolves to 10-10 in CCAA play and kept their postseason hopes alive with two games remaining.
SSU got going early, closing the first quarter on a 13-4 run to lead by nine. Rathjen helped break the game open halfway through the period with five straight points on a 3-pointer and a layup.
Laura Smith closed the quarter with a bucket and then opened the second with four straight to move the margin to 13. After the Gators closed to within eight the Seawolves ripped off 11 in a row to push it up to 19.
Sheriene Arikat, Rathjen and
Jayme Blackard all hit threes during the run with Rathjen also hitting a jumper.
Sonoma State took a 17-point lead into halftime and extended that advantage in the third. After getting the margin to 20 for the first time, Rathjen and
Alli McDonald knocked down back-to-back triples to make it a 26-point game and cruise to the victory.
Rathjen hit 8 of 10 shots, including 5 of 7 from long distance on her way to 21 points off the bench. McDonald added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Blackard also reached double figures with 11.
The Seawolves moved into 6
th place with the victory and have two games left to play for a chance to earn a berth into the CCAA Tournament. They are back in action on Saturday when they head to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay at 5:30 pm.
