Seawolves Sweep Dominican in Non-Conference Twinbill

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team picked up their third straight doubleheader sweep, taking down Dominican 4-2 and 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.  The Seawolves improved to 14-9 on the season with the victories and head to the Tournament of Champions this weekend.

SSU's pitchers continued their excellence on the mound as Bailee Reed and Nichole Sarra each picked up complete game victories.  Reed, the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week went all eight innings in the opener to lead the Seawolves to an extra inning win.  She held the Penguins scoreless for the first five innings and then held them without a run in the 7th and 8th.  Reed allowed just six hits and struck out four.

Offensively the Seawolves plated runs in the 1st and 3rd innings to take a 2-0 lead.  Rylee Nishimoto doubled in the 1st and came around to score on a single by Lauren Mirtoni for the early SSU advantage.  Two innings later, Nishimoto scored Anna Zoia-Buescher on a fielder's choice for the game's second run.  The Penguins evened the score in the 6th with a two-run home run by Taylor Rodriguez which ultimately sent the game to extra innings.

Giana Hays delivered the big hit in the 8th, doubling home Nishimoto to give Sonoma State a 3-2 lead.  She would later score on a clutch two-out single by Jocelyn Robles to give Reed a two-run cushion.  She would do the rest from there, striking out two batter in the 8th to seal the victory.

Sarra started off the second game where she picked up last weekend, coming off a two-hit shutout against Cal State Monterey Bay.  Against Dominican, Sarra cruised through five innings without allowing a hit.  Meanwhile, the Seawolves offense got going in the 5th inning, scoring three runs and then adding two more in the 6th

Kaiya Dickens got it started in the 5th with a lead-off single and came all the way around to score when Zoia-Buescher doubled to the left centerfield wall.  Two batters later Hays doubled home both Zoia-Buescher and Nishimoto to make it 3-0.  The following inning, Jasmine Moreno, Dickens and Zoia-Buescher all singled to load the bases.  Nishimoto then followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Penguins were able to break-up the no-hitter in the 6th and score a pair of runs while loading the bases with just one out.  Sarra then got a big strikeout and a groundball to get out of the inning without any more damage.  Sarra finished off the 7th with a pop-up to pick up her third straight victory.

Nishimoto finished the day with four hits, two coming in each game.  Hays added three hits, all doubled and drove in three runs.  Zoia-Buescher added three hits in the nightcap and tacked on a steal.

The Seawolves head to Turlock this weekend for the Tournament of Champions.  SSU will play two games on both Friday and Saturday before closing out the weekend with a game on Sunday.
