Game Recap: Baseball |

Janowicz Records First Win of the Season with 7 Strikeouts over Stanislaus State

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Thursday, March 28th, the Sonoma State baseball team split their doubleheader with Stanislaus State, taking the first game 5-2 but dropping the second 13-3. In game one, senior right hander Blake Janowicz made his team leading 7th start of the season and gave the Seawolves pitching staff a huge lift with 7 strong innings allowing just two runs on three hits. The entire pitching staff for SSU was on short rest with their previous series against SF State taking place on Sunday and Monday and Janowicz was locked in with his best outing of the season. He showed a great mix of pitches and his location was spot on, keeping hitters off balance all game long. His 7 strikeouts would go down as a career high for the Southern California native.

Fellow senior Nik Kamages has transitioned to the bullpen in recent weeks but has put together solid relief appearances for Sonoma State. He would finish off the game with two scoreless innings and pick up his first save of the season. The Seawolves continue to ride the hot bats throughout the lineup in shortstop Daniel Monti and designated hitter Garret Barto. The duo combined for four hits in the win and Monti belted his 5th homer of the season with a solo shot in the first.

Barto also had an RBI single in the 3rd to give SSU a 3-2 lead, his 11th RBI of the season. Despite not being in the everyday lineup to start the season, Barto has hit his way to a near .350 batting average and has hits in 5 of his last 6 games for the Seawolves. Second baseman Shane Callison came through with an RBI single up the middle to tack on another run in the 6th, and then Sonoma State took advantage of runners on in the 7th with catcher Chris Ortiz grounding out to third to plate a hustling Christopher Wright from third.

GAME TWO SSU 3-13 STAN

In game two of Thursday's doubleheader, Vacaville native Caleb Davis would make his second start of the season. After pitching his way out of a jam in the first, the Warriors would jump on him in the second with a 5-run inning. Davis would make way for lefty Michael Panichi who went on to throw four innings allowing just 3 runs on 3 hits.

SSU would go on to score in the next two innings but failed to capitalize with runners on to have a big inning of their own. Four more runs in the 6th inning would force the Seawolves to make two pitching changes and extend the Warriors lead to 10-3. Stanislaus State would go on to take game two by a score of 13-3 and putting up 13 hits in the game.

LOOKING AHEAD

The series will pause on Friday with heavy rainfall in the forecast but will plan to resume on Saturday, with another doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM. As of now, the games will be played at Seawolf Diamond but a location change could take place if the weather worsens.

With the doubleheader split on Thursday, the Seawolves improve to 13-14 overall and 7-10 in conference play. Live stats and stream links can be found at sonomaseawolves.com and you can stream the games LIVE on the CCAA Network.
