HAYWARD, CALIF. - On Sunday, March 3rd, the Sonoma State baseball team rallied from behind with three home runs to pick up the 5-2 win over Cal State East Bay. The game was halted Saturday afternoon due to rain and resumed Sunday morning.
Tanner Fonoti started the 7-inning game on Saturday but would get the ball again and resume his pitching duties on Sunday after the delay. He went on to throw another two innings and finished his outing with 6 innings giving up just one run.
Marcellus Henry would give up a run in the 7th but strikeout the final batter to seal the 5-2 come from behind win.
GAME 3 SSU 5-2 CSUEB
After giving up an early run in the first,
Chris Ortiz would get the Seawolves on the board with a 2-run shot in the 4th inning, his second of the series and SSU's first lead of the weekend. Fonoti gave up 9 hits but struck out 4 batters and found a groove after the first inning, keeping the Pioneers off the scoreboard for five straight innings.
The exclamation point would come in the 6th inning with back-to-back homers from
Daniel Monti and
Niko Tejada to extend SSU's lead to 5-1. The pair of solo shots would go down as both players' second home runs of the season.
Fonoti lowered his ERA to 3.00 and picked up his second win of the season.
Shane Callison continues to provide a great spark out of the leadoff spot as he went 2-4 from the plate and raised his on-base percentage to .407. Ortiz and Monti led the way with two hits each on the day.
GAME 4 SSU 9-3 CSUEB (halted due to rain)
After resuming and completing game three Sunday morning, both teams would gear up for the series finale with the Seawolves primed for a hard fought weekend split. This time, head coach
John Goelz and his group would get on the board first with three straight doubles to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning. SSU would tack on four more runs in a messy 3rd inning for Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves took advantage of four walks and a hit-by-pitch in the inning, forcing the Pioneers starter out of the game.
Sonoma State loaded the bases again in the 5th inning and this time
Shane Callison and
Kenny Decelle would deliver RBI singles to extend their lead to 9-2. Freshman right-hander
Luke Ivanoff got his first start of the season and didn't disappoint. Ivanoff went 5 innings for the Seawolves giving up just 3 runs on 4 hits. He was exactly what Sonoma State's pitching staff needed out of the fourth starter spot, giving the team great length and a chance at a series split. The Seawolves offense also took advantage of some poor pitching, putting up 9 runs on 8 hits. The game would eventually come to a stop with rain continuing to come down in the 7th inning. The game will be resumed and completed at a date yet to be determined. Updates will be provided as soon as they are made available.
The Seawolves improved to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play after their 5-2 victory in game three. Game four was halted due to rain but SSU held a 9-3 advantage in the 7th inning.
