Seawolves Sweep Twinbill with Wild Extra Inning Victory

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball outlasted Stanislaus State in an 11-inning marathon in Friday's doubleheader.  The Seawolves completed the sweep with the 8-7 victory after taking the series opener 6-1.  SSU moved to 18-10 in CCAA play with the wins and improved to 25-15 overall.

Bailee Reed drew the start in the opener and cruised through the first five innings without allowing a run.  Giana Hays took care of the offense, hitting a pair of home runs and adding a double to drive in four of the six runs.  Hays belted her first long ball to dead center in the 3rd inning, scoring Rylee Nishimoto and giving the Seawolves a 3-0 advantage.  In the 5th she added a solo shot, this time to left field for her 7th big fly of the season.  Hays was not done yet, sending a double to right field in the 6th to score SSU's final run.

Kaiya Dickens plated the other two runs for Sonoma State with RBI singles in both the 2nd and 5th innings.  Taylor Rapp and Nishimoto each added two hits and two runs in the contest.  Reed went 5.2 innings to earn her 13th win of the season, allowing just 1 run.  Charlie Johnson did the rest, retiring all four batter she faced.

The nightcap was wild from the start with the Seawolves scoring first on a two-out rally in the top of the 2nd.  Hays walked, followed by a RBI double by Lauren Mirtoni and a RBI single by Rapp.  The lead did not last long as the Warriors put up 5 runs in the bottom of the frame despite just two hits.  SSU got one back in the top of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly by Hays and then regained the lead in the top of the 3rd with three runs.  Dickens plated the first run of the inning with a double and three batters later Anna Zoia-Buescher delivered a two-out, two-run double to put the Seawolves back on top at 6-5.  Hays doubled in another run in the 5th to send the game to the 7th at 7-5.

Johnson was in the circle for the Seawolves after reliving Sarra in the bottom of the 1st and cruised through the next five innings.  However, in the bottom of the 7th, Stanislaus State used a key double and a two-out single to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.

Reed came back in relief in the 8th and got through the next three innings without allowing a run.  In the top of the 11th the Seawolves offense put the team back on top.  Jasmine Moreno picked up her fourth hit of the game with a single to right and bunted over to 2nd by Dickens.  Skylar Linnane then delivered the biggest hit of the game with a double to the wall in right center to score Moreno.  Reed closed the door in the bottom of the 11th to pick up her 14th win with four scoreless frames.

Moreno set a career high with four hits while five other Seawolves recorded two hits. SSU finished with 16 hits in the game, a season high.

These two teams will square off again tomorrow for another doubleheader with first pitch slated for 11:00 am.
