TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball outlasted Stanislaus State in an 11-inning marathon in Friday's doubleheader. The Seawolves completed the sweep with the 8-7 victory after taking the series opener 6-1. SSU moved to 18-10 in CCAA play with the wins and improved to 25-15 overall.
Bailee Reed drew the start in the opener and cruised through the first five innings without allowing a run.
Giana Hays took care of the offense, hitting a pair of home runs and adding a double to drive in four of the six runs. Hays belted her first long ball to dead center in the 3
rd inning, scoring
Rylee Nishimoto and giving the Seawolves a 3-0 advantage. In the 5
th she added a solo shot, this time to left field for her 7
th big fly of the season. Hays was not done yet, sending a double to right field in the 6
th to score SSU's final run.
Kaiya Dickens plated the other two runs for Sonoma State with RBI singles in both the 2
nd and 5
th innings.
Taylor Rapp and Nishimoto each added two hits and two runs in the contest. Reed went 5.2 innings to earn her 13
th win of the season, allowing just 1 run.
Charlie Johnson did the rest, retiring all four batter she faced.
The nightcap was wild from the start with the Seawolves scoring first on a two-out rally in the top of the 2
nd. Hays walked, followed by a RBI double by
Lauren Mirtoni and a RBI single by Rapp. The lead did not last long as the Warriors put up 5 runs in the bottom of the frame despite just two hits. SSU got one back in the top of the 2
nd on a sacrifice fly by Hays and then regained the lead in the top of the 3
rd with three runs. Dickens plated the first run of the inning with a double and three batters later
Anna Zoia-Buescher delivered a two-out, two-run double to put the Seawolves back on top at 6-5. Hays doubled in another run in the 5
th to send the game to the 7
th at 7-5.
Johnson was in the circle for the Seawolves after reliving Sarra in the bottom of the 1
st and cruised through the next five innings. However, in the bottom of the 7
th, Stanislaus State used a key double and a two-out single to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.
Reed came back in relief in the 8
th and got through the next three innings without allowing a run. In the top of the 11
th the Seawolves offense put the team back on top.
Jasmine Moreno picked up her fourth hit of the game with a single to right and bunted over to 2
nd by Dickens.
Skylar Linnane then delivered the biggest hit of the game with a double to the wall in right center to score Moreno. Reed closed the door in the bottom of the 11
th to pick up her 14
th win with four scoreless frames.
Moreno set a career high with four hits while five other Seawolves recorded two hits. SSU finished with 16 hits in the game, a season high.
These two teams will square off again tomorrow for another doubleheader with first pitch slated for 11:00 am.
