ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- Fans of Sonoma State Men's Soccer were treated to an intense back and forth match against the visiting Lumberjacks of Cal Poly Humboldt. The Seawolves showcased their depth with 14 different players seeing at least 40 minutes of action. For the third time in as many meetings these two conference rivals have now ended in a tie. Today was highlighted by strong defensive performances and plenty of offensive opportunities from the Seawolves!
For the game Sonoma State posted 18 shots with seven of them on goal. Alejandro Zarate and Jose Rios Lara led the way with a combined eight shots between the pair. Freshman Alejandro Verdugo came incredibly close to being the teams hero of the day with a break away shot that would have been a game winner with just around 40 seconds on the clock. Despite not finding the back of the net, Verdugo's play has been a brightspot as the future looks incredibly bright.
The Seawolves lone goal on the day came late in the first half thanks to Oswaldo Rojas. After a well placed corner kick Tiernan Nicewander took a shot that was blocked. Off of the rebound, Rojas took another shot directly in front of the goal and was fouled in the process. Rojas calmly faced down the Lumberjacks goalie and fired a perfectly placed ball into the lower left corner of the net for his second goal of the season. All year long, the junior out of Santa Rosa has been a staple of coach Marcus Ziemer's rotation all year long with appearances in all seven games this year including four starts.
This was the last of the teams non conference games and will now turn their attention to CCAA play. Sonoma State returns to the pitch this coming Friday when they take on Cal State San Marcos at home. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 3:00 pm.
