SEATTLE, WASH.- After a handful of exhibition matches, Sonoma State Men's Soccer officially started the 2024 season against the Falcons of Seattle Pacific. The 90 minute match was locked in a defensive battle for close to 74 minutes before the Falcons were able to score a pair of late goals to pull away. While the Seawolves were unable to secure the victory, the match will serve as a solid starting point for the rest of the season!
Coach Marcus Ziemer's squad spent the full 90 minutes playing with an attack oriented mindset. The team would fire 15 total shots with three of them on goal. As was the case with much of the preseason exhibitions, Alejandro Zarate led the teams offensive attack with three shots, two of them on target. Alongside Zarate, newcomer Brian Chang was all on the offensive with two shots and with one on goal.
Freshman Alejandro Verdugo played roughly 58 minutes but wasted no time looking to make his mark on a college pitch. He tied Zarate with a team high three shots. Overall the ball was spread around with a total of eight players getting at least one shot.
As for the team's goalkeeper, Jack Chapman, played the full 90 minutes with a game high six saves. The sophomore from Arizona battled all game long and held the line for much of the night against a strong opponent in hostile territory.
Sonoma State returns to the pitch on Saturday when they take on Western Washington in Bellingham. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 1:00 pm.
