BELLINGHAM, Calif. - The Sonoma State volleyball team showcased their resilience and offensive prowess in a thrilling 3-1 victory over Central Washington on the final day of the WWU Invitational. The match was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts, with the Seawolves ultimately prevailing with set scores of 28-26, 20-25, 25-19, and 25-16.
The opening set was a nail-biter, featuring 6 tie scores and 2 lead changes. SSU racked up an impressive 19 kills in the opening game with
Emily Hernandez leading the way with 5 kills on 6 swings. With Central Washington leading 23-21,
Theo Hayse and Hernandez recorded back-to-back kills to even the score. In a crucial moment,
Kaden Young delivered another ace to push Sonoma State to set point at 27-26.
Peyton McBride then sealed the deal with a powerful kill, giving the Seawolves the early advantage.
Central Washington regrouped in the second set, evening the match with a 25-20 win. The rest of the match was all Sonoma State as a potent offensive attack led the way. The Seawolves attack percentage soared to .324 in the third set and an impressive .385 in the fourth.
Peyton McBride and Hayse were instrumental in this offensive surge, consistently finding gaps in Central Washington's defense. McBride recorded nine kills on just 11 swings over the final two sets without registering an error. Hayse meanwhile added three in each set.
Sonoma State led wire-to-wire in the third set before using a huge nine point run in the fourth to put the match away. With the score tied at 11-11, the Seawolves used kills from Hayse and Hernandez along with four aces from
Meadow Cooper.
McBride led the Seawolves attack with a career high 18 kills and just two errors while hitting .533. Hayse also reached double figures for the first time with 12 kills while Hernandez tacked on ten kills and six blocks.
Jules Tan and
Brynna Slayton both notched over 20 assists with 26 and 24 respectively with Cooper chipping in a team best 14 digs and four aces.
The Seawolves are back in action next week when they head to Hayward to play three matches in the Cal State East Bay Tournament.
