ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- Sonoma State Women's Basketball hosted the Wildcats of Chico State in an important clash of Northern California CCAA programs. The Seawolves, coming off a win against Cal Poly Humboldt, coach Des Abeyta's squad came out with a defensive intensity that slowed down the Wildcats offense.
Across 40 minutes of playing time Chico was limited to just 38% shooting from the floor and 33% from three. The game was physical from the tip with both teams having to earn every bucket through contact. Sonoma's ball pressure was instrumental in forcing 16 Chico State turnovers including nine steals for the Seawolves. They also added five blocks for the day with Abbey Hadsell and Sheriene Arikat both swatting away two shots. Lastly, Sonoma was effective in turning their defense to offense with 15 points scored off of the 16 turnovers they generated.
The highlight of the game was Jennifer Moreno's breakout performance. In just 23 minutes Moreno dominated on every facet of the court. Her game high 19 points came on a variety of crafty finishes around the hoop and jump shots. She was 64% from the floor while also grabbing four rebounds, handing out three assists and swiped a pair of steals.
Alongside Moreno, Sheriene Arikat did everything asked of her in her 24 minutes of playing time. Not only did she hit a handful of impressive layups but she facilitated the team's offense all game long. Her five assists came courtesy of impressive pocket passes to backdoor cutters while also grabbing four rebounds and blocking a pair of shots.
It was a massive win for the Seawolves who have won two straight in conference play. They will now prepare to hit the road for the next two weeks with a four game road trip now on deck. Up next for Sonoma is Stanislaus State on January 23rd!
