POMONA, CALIF.- For the second time this season, Sonoma State pushed Cal Poly Pomona to overtime, thanks to balanced scoring, sharp perimeter shooting, and disciplined ball control in a hard-fought 78-73 loss at Kellogg Arena.
The Seawolves had four players score in double figures, led by Nick Medeiros with 14 points. James Nobles added 13, while Chris Holley and Julian Bryant each contributed 10. Their collective scoring effort kept Sonoma State competitive throughout the game. Sonoma is home to a balanced unit that is more than capable of staying in games with any combination of scoring threats.
A key factor in Sonoma State's ability to force overtime was their efficiency from beyond the arc, shooting 40% (8-for-20) from three-point range. Jack Schultz played a pivotal role in that effort, knocking down three triples. Schultz has emerged as one of the premier sharpshooters in the CCAA and his veteran gamesmanship makes him an impact player as a rebounder, playmaker and shooter.
On the defensive end, the Seawolves capitalized on Cal Poly Pomona's mistakes, scoring 18 points off turnovers while committing only seven giveaways themselves. Their ability to take care of the ball was a direct result of starting point guard Chris Holley owning the conference's best assist to turnover ratio. Holley has only turned the ball over four times in his last four outings.
With the loss, Sonoma State now turns their attention to Cal State San Bernardino as the teams southern California road trip marches on!
