ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- The Seawolves made sure to end the first series of conference play on a high note thanks to hot bats at the plate with Vinny Lencioni leading the way. The Seawovles would strike first in the second inning and never looked back. With the offense starting to find a groove, Sonoma State is primed to make some noise down in Monterey Bay next week.
Offensively, Sonoma State put together a strong day thanks to nine hits that resulted in seven runs. Aryonis Harrison, Ben Saitz, Gabriel Tapia and Evan Merz all recorded a hit on the day with Saitz's and Tapia's singles resulting in an RBI.
Starting third baseman Joey Replogle continued to have the hot hand against the Pioneers collecting two more hits pushing his series total against the Pioneers to five. After a walk off single on Saturday, Replogle continued to help stabilize the offense. This was his third, multi-hit game of the season and is touting a .316 batting average for good measure.
Yet, the player of the day was junior catcher Vinny Lencioni. Lencioni started as the Seawolves designated hitter and clearly took the "hitter" part of the title seriously. During the bottom of the third, with the Seawolves already holding a three run lead, Lencioni would homer driving in himself and Evan Merz for his first two RBI's of the season. Yet, the Santa Rosa native wasn't done as he ended the game on a high note with a solo shot to center field to cement the Seawovles victory by a final margin of 7-4. Lencioni has been extremely effective as a spark in the batting order. In 15 at bats he has collected two doubles, two home runs and two singles for a stellar .400 batting average.
On the mound Hawk Hill earned his first save of the year with an outstanding two innings pitched to close the game. He faced six batters, did not allow a single hit and struck out three. In his last four innings of work Hill has only allowed a single hit while striking out five batters.
The Seawolves posted a solid three days of work out on Seawolf Diamond and now must prepare for the local road trip down to Monterey Bay. The Otters are one of the stronger programs in the CCAA and should be a great test for the Seawolves!
