CHICO, CALIF.- The regular season is winding down for Sonoma State Women's Basketball and the Seawolves, having won three straight, headed north to take on the Wildcats of Chico State. It was a back and forth affair for most of the game with the score sitting at 56-54 in favor of the Seawolves heading into the final frame of play. With both teams having booked tickets to the conference championship tournament, seeding implications were on the line as Chico's fourth quarter rally was enough for them to pull away and secure the win.
Leading the way for Sonoma was senior guard Jayme Blackard. Blackard has been on a tear for the final stretch of the season and had another big game on the road. Blackard poured in 26 points and drilled four shots from behind the arc in her best shooting display of the year. In usual Blackard fashion she was also active in all facets of the game as a defender, playmaker and rebounder. She rounded out the boxscore with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. With the playoffs right around the corner the Seawolves floor general is rounding into form.
Alongside Blackard, fellow backcourt mate Alysa Lopez was also impactful. Lopez has been outstanding in her first season with the Seawolves. The combo guard put together her 20th double digit scoring effort with 15 points on 46% shooting from the floor. She also secured five rebounds and pushed her season averages up to 13.7 points and four boards a night. Sonoma's backcourt has the ability to take over on any given night and are now averaging 25.4 points and 8.8 rebounds together.
The Seawolves will look to round out the season with one last road trip up the coast to Cal Poly Humboldt. Earlier this year Sonoma managed an eight point victory behind 45 points from the aforementioned backcourt. The Seawolves will look to end the regular season 4-1 and with Blackard and Lopez playing at an all-conference level that is more than obtainable.
