ROHNERT PARK, CALIF.- Sonoma State Women's Basketball faced off against the Gators of San Francisco State in a tightly contested matchup for 40 minutes. Sonoma battled on both ends of the court and had strong individual performances but came up just short in the final few possessions.
As a unit Sonoma forced 20 turnovers while coming up with 13 steals that led to 12 points. As has been the case all year long, the Seawolves have been extremely disruptive in passing lanes and causing chaos in opposing teams backcourt. Four players recorded at least two steals with Jayme Blackard pacing all players with five steals. Alysa Lopez has taken her defense up a notch as well by coming up with two blocks. She now has seven blocks in her last two outings.
Lopez not only had a strong defensive outing but was once again the catalyst of the team's offense. Lopez scored 19 points sparking a huge second half push that saw the Seawolves strom back into the game. Lopez is now up to eight straight double digit scoring outings and has shown no signs of slowing down.
The Seawolves second leading scorer was freshman guard Sydney Peterson who had the best outing of her young career and has begun to find her footing in the rotation. Peterson's quickness was on full display on both defense and offense. She came up with two steals while competing with the top guards on the Gators team. She scored 11 points while shooting a near perfect 5-6 from the floor and chipped in three assists for good measure. The duo of Jayme Blackard and Peterson is one of the quickest in the conference and the connection they displayed was lethal in transition.
Despite the loss the Seawolves are firmly in the thick of the CCAA Playoff race. Now the team looks to a road trip with the first game being a matchup against the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona.
