SEASIDE, CALIF.- Despite a late offensive surge, Sonoma State baseball couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 13-7 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.
Evan Merz continued his strong series at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, his latest standout performance in what has been a big weekend for the junior. Merz was outstanding against the Otters collecting seven hits and a pair of RBIs for the weekend. For good measure he also stole a pair of bases and drew a walk. Merz has been a machine at the plate recording at least one hit in every appearance he has made this year.
After being held scoreless through six innings, the Seawolves found life in the seventh, plating four runs to cut into the Otters' lead. Sonoma State capitalized on key at-bats, with Merz and Ben Saitz each driving in runs. The offense kept pressing in the ninth, tacking on three more runs, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
Sonoma State finished with nine hits, led by Merz and center fielder Aryonis Harrison, who had three hits and two RBIs. Harrison caught fire in the final two games of the series accounting for four hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Despite the strong finish, an early six-run first inning by Monterey Bay put the Seawolves in a hole they couldn't climb out of.
The Seawolves will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they return home for conference play with the Wildcats of Chico State on deck!
