Seawolves Sweep Doubleheader to Take Series Win over Cal State Dominguez Hills

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Behind clutch pitching and late-inning heroics, Sonoma State softball completed a sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills, taking both games of a CCAA doubleheader with 3-1 and 2-1 victories at Seawolf Softball Field.  The Seawolves used dominant pitching and timely hitting, including a walk-off 8th inning single by Lauren Mirtoni to seal the series.

The opener saw the Seawolves jump ahead early and never look back, capitalizing on a few big hits in the first and third innings to claim a 3-1 win.  Sophia Newcomb led off in the bottom of the first with a double and scored on an RBI single by Amari Houston, tying the game 1-1.

The decisive frame came in the third, as Sonoma State strung together three hits to plate a pair of runs.  Newcomb led off with a single and promptly stole second.  Houston once again followed with a hit of her own and then swiped second to give SSU two runners in scoring position.  Mirtoni followed with a sacrifice fly before Iris Bejarano belted a 2-out double to take a 3-1 lead.

Charlie Johnson (17-11) was steady throughout, scattering seven hits over seven innings while walking two and striking out two. Johnson induced two key double plays to escape further trouble in the later innings, including a game-ending double play to seal the game.

The second game was a classic pitchers' duel, ultimately decided in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the eighth when Mirtoni's RBI single down the left field line gave the Seawolves a 2-1 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Sonoma State tied the game in the bottom of the seventh after trailing 1-0 most of the afternoon. Bejarano opened the 7th with a walk and Kaiya Dickens followed with a single to move pinch runner Olivia Gabriel to third.  Taylor Rapp tied the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to force extra innings.

Newcomb, who was 2-for-4 in the game and a catalyst all day, singled to start the eighth. Houston moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, and Mirtoni delivered the game-winning hit on the first pitch of her at-bat to walk it off.

Nichole Sarra (1-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing four shutout innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.  Alexis Camberos provided excellent work as the starter, also going four innings and allowing just three hits and one run.

With the sweep, Sonoma State improves to 15-13 in CCAA play and stands alone in fourth place with eight games to play.  The Seawolves are now 28-19 overall with their final home series of the season next week when they host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Saturday.
