Sonoma State Earns Opening Day Split Against Visiting Toros

Game 1: SSU 2, CSDH 3

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Despite a valiant effort on the mound and solid defensive support, Sonoma State dropped a close 3-2 contest in the series opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Star pitcher Charlie Johnson delivered another strong outing, going the distance with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing just four hits and three runs—two of them earned—while striking out one. Johnson held the Toros scoreless over the final four innings, giving the Seawolves a chance to rally late.

The Sonoma defense played clean and crisp, committing no errors and executing several key plays to support their ace. Highlights included error-free performances from the infield, anchored by third baseman Lauren Mirtoni and shortstop Carissa Marquez, who each contributed to multiple outs.

The offense was limited to seven hits, with Sophia Newcomb and Amari Houston leading the way at the top of the lineup. Sonoma's runs came in the third and sixth innings but ultimately weren't enough to overcome the early 3-0 deficit.

Game 2: SSU 7, CSDH 2

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Sonoma State bounced back in game two of Friday's doubleheader, riding a hot offense and an impressive performance from freshman pitcher Ava Paquin to a 7-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Seawolves tallied 11 hits in the win, spreading production throughout the lineup. Multiple-hit performances came from several players. Amari Houston would record a pair of hits while scoring three runs. Jasmine Moreno and Iris Bejarano would combine four hits, five RBI's and two doubles. Lastly, Lauren Mirtoni's hot hand at the plate has shown no signs of slowing down. The Seawolves third baseman recorded three hits, an RBI and stole a base for good measure.

Freshman Ava Paquin was composed and effective in the circle, allowing just two runs on 10 hits over 7.0 innings. She struck out three while working around traffic and limiting big innings. Her poise under pressure helped Sonoma maintain control throughout.

The Seawolves struck early with two runs in the first inning and added on with a three-run third and a pair in the fourth. The offense capitalized on key opportunities and made sure Paquin's solid performance would be rewarded with a win.
