Sonoma Baseball Sweeps Broncos During Second Day of CCAA Series

Game 1: SSU 14, CPP 12

POMONA, CALIF.- Sonoma State's offense exploded in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, cruising to a 14-12 victory over Cal Poly Pomona behind a 15-hit outburst. The Seawolves put up plenty of runs early, scoring nine runs over the first two innings and never looked back.

Evan Merz, Brandon Marion, and Tyler Crudo each had standout performances at the plate, collecting two hits apiece to fuel the early onslaught. Eli Hancock starred with a monster day, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases to set the tone from the bottom of the order.

Sonoma State's lineup showed tremendous depth, with Max Shabestari, Aryonis Harrison, and Chris Ortiz each driving in multiple runs to keep the pressure on the Broncos' pitching staff. Shabestari led the charge with three RBIs, while Harrison and Ortiz chipped in two RBIs each.

Despite a late rally from Cal Poly Pomona, the Seawolves' early offensive explosion was too much to overcome as Sonoma State secured a thrilling victory to open the day.

Game 2: SSU 6, CPP 2

POMONA, CALIF.- In the nightcap, it was the pitching that stole the show for Sonoma State. Michael Panichi delivered a dominating complete game performance, tossing seven strong innings to lead the Seawolves to a 6-2 win and a doubleheader sweep over Cal Poly Pomona.

Panichi was electric from the start, allowing just four hits and striking out 10 while walking only three. The right-hander kept the Broncos off balance all night, recording outs in bunches and working efficiently to secure the win.

Backing Panichi's effort was a balanced Seawolves offense. Joey Replogle, Gabriel Tapia, and Jacob Courtney all drove in two runs apiece to provide the necessary support. Tapia highlighted the attack with a triple, while Courtney delivered a clutch two-run double to widen the lead late.

With the sweep, Sonoma State has secured three straight wins over the Broncos and will look to complete the series sweep tomorrow as the Seawolves look to end the 2025 season on a high note!
