TURLOCK, Calif. — Sonoma State's softball team once again took a pair from Stanislaus State to finish off the series sweep over the weekend. The Seawolves took the first game 6-3 before using dominant pitching performances in the finale to earn a 4-0 victory. SSU improved to 25-18 overall and 12-12 in the CCAA with the wins.
Sonoma State opened the day with a late offensive surge to claim a 6-3 victory. The Seawolves entered the seventh inning with a slim 2-0 lead but exploded for four runs to put the game out of reach.
Kaiya Dickens delivered the big blow with a two-run single in the final frame, while
Taylor Rapp added an RBI single to cap the rally.
Sophia Newcomb sparked the offense from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Dickens was instrumental as well, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.
Iris Bejarano chipped in with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.
Pitcher
Charlie Johnson was strong in the circle for Sonoma State, tossing a complete game while allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned). She struck out two to secure her 16th win of the season.
The Seawolves carried their momentum into Game 2, blanking Stanislaus State behind a combined one-hitter from
Alexis Camberos and
Nichole Sarra. Camberos worked four innings of one-hit ball, striking out one and improving her record to 4-1. Sarra meanwhile closed it out with three perfect innings to earn her second save of the season.
Sonoma's offense was led by Newcomb once again, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored. Dickens added her second home run of the season in the third inning to extend SSU's lead to 2-0 after
Carissa Marquez plated the game's first run in the second inning.
Amari Houston also had a strong showing at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.
Morgan Kingsbury also finished with two hits of her own for the second straight game.
The Seawolves broke open the game in the sixth inning with three runs. Newcomb's two-run triple down the right-field line highlighted the frame, while an error allowed another run to cross.
Sonoma State returns home next week for a 4-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills at Seawolf Softball Field. The series will start on Friday with the live stream available on FloCollege.
