Rafael Martinez begins his second season as the assistant coach for the Sonoma State University men’s and women’s tennis programs in 2019.
Martinez comes to the Seawolves after serving as the assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams at his alma mater, Holy Names University, during the 2017 season. As an undergrad, he was named team captain from 2013 to 2015 as well as Holy Names’ Male Athlete of the Year in 2015. Martinez was regionally ranked #18 in singles and #6 in doubles during the 2015 season in which he led HNU Tennis to achieve a #33 national ranking in the second year of the program’s history.
Martinez hails from Chula Vista, Calif., where he was born, but spent most of his childhood in Tijuana, Mexico, where he was raised until the age of 14. Following the conferral of his BA in Business and Sports Management, Martinez has gone on to pursue a Masters of Business Administration which he is currently working towards at Sonoma State University.
