Olsem Grabs CCAA Men's Basketball Player Of The Week Honor

Will Olsem averaged 21.5 points in a pair of key wins over San Francisco State and #10 Cal Poly Pomona last weekend.
WALNUT CREEK, Calif- After leading the Sonoma State men's basketball team to a pair of wins last weekend, including a thrilling victory over tenth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, junior guard Will Olsem has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.  It is the first such award for Olsem in his career.

The sharpshooter out of Sacramento, Calif. drained 11 three-pointers in two games, seven of which came in Thursday's 81-69 triumph over San Francisco State.  All in all, Olsem went 14 of 26 from the hardwood (53.8 percent), including 11 of 20 from beyond the three-point arc.  He dropped in 43 points last weekend; a season-high 25 points led all scorers on Thursday against the Gators, following it with a game-high 18-point performance against the Broncos.

A 46.3-percent shooter from long range, Olsem has made 38 three-pointers this season, which is the second-most in the CCAA this season.  In just 68 career games, he is second on Sonoma State's all-time list for most three-pointers made with 162, 52 shy of the school record of 214, set by former SSU student-athlete Andrew Kochevar (2003-08).

It is the second CCAA Player of the Week award for a member of the SSU men's basketball team this season; senior Steven Pratt earned the honor back on Nov. 28, 2011.

Sonoma State will head out on the road for the next two weekends, starting with a southern California trip to face UC San Diego (6-9, 2-8 CCAA) on Friday and conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino (9-4, 8-2 CCAA) on Saturday.  Tipoff for both nights is set for 7:30 p.m.
