CHICO, Calif-
Steven Browne scored just 31 seconds in to double overtime to lead Sonoma State to a 2-1 win over rival Chico State in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon in Chico. The win lifts the Seawolves' record to 14-5-1, 13-2-1 CCAA. The Wildcats were knocked out of postseason contention with the loss and end their season at 9-9-1, 8-7-1 CCAA.
Sonoma State, the No. 1 seed in next weekend's CCAA Tournament, will play No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros were a 3-1 winner at San Francisco State on Sunday.
Ross Middlemiss scored his second goal in as many games to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. The Arcata native headed in
Mike Travis' re-start from the corner.
Chico tied things up with an A.J. Carboneau goal in the 47th minute off a Mike Gardner assist.
Knowing their postseason hopes hinged on getting a win, the Wildcats pushed forward in an attempt to break the tie. However, this made the defense vulnerable and
Steven Browne made them pay off an assist by
Andrew Bailey.
Sonoma State played a man down for most of the game after sophomore
Nathan Medina was charged with a red card. More damaging is the fact that Medina will now have to sit out the Seawolves' next game.
Mason Hill-Harrill got the win in goal for the Seawolves.
The Seawolves will meet Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 1:30 pm. The other semifinal game features No. 2 Cal State L.A. against Cal State Stanislaus.
