ROHNERT PARK, Calif- It wasn't easy, but the Sonoma State volleyball team picked up a big win on Wednesday night over Humboldt State at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park. After going up 2-0, the Seawolves lost two games and had to fight back for victory in the fifth. The win lifts the Seawolves to 7-8, 4-7 CCAA. The Lumberjacks fall to 6-9, 3-8 CCAA.
At the beginning of the night, it looked like Sonoma State was going to roll to a sweep, much as Humboldt did in the teams' earlier meeting this year. The Seawolves hit .265 in a 30-26 game one win, then .395 in a 30-18 game two romp. That's when things got tricky.
The Seawolves got up 17-12 in game three before Humboldt went on a 10-3 run to take the lead. SSU made a last gasp effort, but they couldn't overcome the 'Jacks in a 30-26 loss.
Game four was controlled by Humboldt State as they hit a game-high .262 on their way to another 30-26 win.
In game five, HSU opened up a 13-10 lead before SSU scored four in a row to go up 14-13. After a Humboldt point, SSU put the match away thanks to a pair of Humboldt ball handling errors.
Freshman Samantha Jagoda had a career-high 12 kills to lead the Seawolf attack. Sarah Illingworth and Michelle Fletcher also had 12 kills each. After compiling just one dig through the first two games, Lillian Harms finished with a team-high 25. Lindsay Brown and Megan Moore combined for 51 assists.
The 'Jacks were led by 14 kills from Katie Norkunas and 12 from LynseyAdams. Maya Domoto was tops with 28 digs and Liz Shannon contributed a team-high 29 assists.
The Seawolves will try to turn their win into a streak on Friday evening when they host Cal State Monterey Bay.
