ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Adriana Diaz had a goal and two assists to lead Sonoma State to a 3-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA women's soccer action Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The win keeps the Seawolves in the thick of the CCAA race with a 9-5-1, 7-3-1 CCAA record. The Otter loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak as they drop to 2-11-2, 2-7-2 CCAA.
Sonoma State earned three points for the win, giving them 22 for the season. Several key CCAA games were being held on Friday afternoon, but at worst, the Seawolves are in the top wildcard position.
The Seawolves lit up the scoreboard just three minutes into the game when an Adriana Diaz throw-in was quickly crossed to Jessica Eshia by Emily Thompson. Eshia headed it in for her second goal of the season. SSU made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute when Kayce Brawley headed in a cross from Diaz for her second goal of the season.
Cal State Monterey Bay cut the lead in half in the 64th when Eva Arzola knocked a laser by Carissa Amiral. Up 2-1, SSU put the game away in the 81st minute on an Adriana Diaz goal off a Jessica Eshia cross.
"Those were three beautiful goals," said SSU head coach Luke Oberkirch, "Today we got up early because we were able to take advantage of our opportunities...something we couldn't do on Wednesday (a 1-1 tie with Humboldt State)."
For the game, SSU outshot the Otters 20-6 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The foul count was even at seven, though CSUMB drew two yellow cards to SSU's one.
Sonoma State will entertain San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Field.
