ROHNERT PARK, Calif- When Sonoma State and Saint Martin's got together last month in Seattle, the game went to overtime before SMU won by a point. On Saturday night, the teams did one better as SSU defeated the Saints in double overtime 93-86. The victory was the first of the year for the Seawolves , now 1-4. The Saints fall to 1-7.
Sonoma State led for most of regulation, but the Saints caught them late in the second half. With the score tied at 66, SMU's Brendan Campbell converted a layup with 1:43 to take a two point lead. On the ensuing posession, Patrick Mitchell scored to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Overtime saw the Seawolves take a four point lead into the final two minutes before, again, the Saints came marching back. A Campbell layup at the one minute mark was followed by a pair of Campbell free throws to tie things up at 78. At the buzzer Mike Carr missed a jumper to win it and the teams went on to double OT.
The Seawolves finally put the game away in the second overtime frame, using a 7-1 spurt with under two minutes to go to get it done.
Jeremy Smith came off the bench to light a fire under the team. The freshman from Chino Hills finished with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He also had four assists and three steals. Patrick Mitchell and Mike Carr also recorded career-high with 19 points. J.T. Tipton had 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Seawolves as well. His rebound total is tied for the fifth best mark in school history and is the most recorded by an SSU player since Chris Oliver had 18 in 2001.
Brendan Campbell led the Saints with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Stephon Harris had 18 points and Greg O'Neal posted 15 in a supporting role.
The teams shot an identical 32-for-69 from the field.
Sonoma State closes out the Ron Logsdon Classic tomorrow night when they host Chaminade University of Honolulu. The Saints take on Cal State Monterey Bay.
