ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State got 18 kills from
Katie LeBeau to knock off Grand Canyon 3-1 (28-30, 30-21, 30-28, 36-34) and stay undefeated at the Seawolf Spike on Friday night in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves go to 2-0 on the season while the Antelopes fall to 0-2.
As they did in their earlier game today, the Seawolves got out to a flat start, falling 30-28. A pair of close wins in the second and third games set up an exciting, climactic fifth game. The teams volleyed back and forth with neither team able to mount any sustained momentum. The Seawolves finally got the upper hand and emerged with a 36-34 win.
LeBeau was just one off her career-high with 18 kills in 48 attacks. Her effort was supported by 13 kills from
Michelle Fletcher and 11 from
Rachel Sagapolu.
Lillian Harms and
Rosie Manton combined for 48 digs in an impressive defensive performance.
Dana Edington had 16 kills to lead Grand Canyon. Ashley Handley had 28 digs and Emily Thompson had 20 as the 'Lopes combined for 102 digs as a team.
After one day of tournament play, all teams are either 2-0 or 0-2. Among the 2-0 teams are Chico State, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, and Sonoma State. At 0-2 are Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Monterey, Grand Canyon, and Alaska.
The Seawolves continue tournament play tomorrow at 11:00 am against Northwest Nazarene. The 'Lopes will meet Cal State Stanislaus at 9:00 am.
