ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Two early goals and a shutout effort by Brook Johnson resulted in a 2-0 Sonoma State men's soccer victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday afternoon at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park. The win was the seventh straight for the Seawolves, who improve to 8-3-0, 7-0-0 CCAA. The Warriors dropped to 4-7-0, 3-4-0 CCAA.
Sonoma State head coach Marcus Ziemer said after the match, "we really showed our depth today. Different guys are showing up every game." The Seawolves started just three upperclassmen- two juniors and a senior. Continued Ziemer, "We moved the ball well and got a couple of nice, quick goals."
Sonoma State got on the board in the 10th minute when Doug Carr played a ball in to Eric Lafon, who scored on a breakaway. Andrew Bailey added some insurance with his team-high sixth goal of the year in the 14th minute on an Eric Larson assist.
Brook Johnson, starting for the second straight game in place of injured Clark Rupp, posted his second straight shutout with a three-save performance.
Sonoma State outshot the Warriors 11-10, but CSUS had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Six yellow cards were accrued in the physical battle, four of which were on Stanislaus.
The Seawolves will hit the road next weekend to take on UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
