LA JOLLA, Calif- Sonoma State got two goals in the final 20 minutes to come from behind and beat UC San Diego 2-1 on Friday afternoon in La Jolla. The win extends SSU's winning streak to eight as they improve to 9-3-0, 8-0-0 CCAA. The Tritons fall to 6-4-1, 4-3-1 CCAA.
After a scoreless first half, it would be the Tritons scoring first as Tom Caplan headed in a ball of a set piece in the 54th minute. Up a goal, the Tritons tried to stack the defense and hold SSU's talented offense out of the net. They wouldn't succeed.
Andrew Bailey found the equalizer in the 71st minute on a beautiful through ball from freshman
Casey Dayton. The goal was Bailey's team-high seventh of the year.
The game-winner came off the foot of
Mike Travis, who punched in a ball from about 12 yards out in the 86th minute.
"We showed a lot of heart and a lot of grit today. Playing in front of a large, loud crowd, we got behind early, but we didn't quit," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer.
Sonoma State held a commanding 17-4 lead in shots. Fouls were fairly even (10-9 in SSU's favor), but the Tritons saw one of their players, Dustin Tannenhaus, ejected from the game after a second yellow card in the 73rd minute.
SSU is off to their best conference start since 1993, when they started 12-0-0 en route to a conference championship.
The Seawolves will try to make it nine in a row on Sunday when they face long-time nemesis Cal State Dominguez Hills.
