SEATTLE, Wash- Sonoma State used a strong second half surge to defeat Western Washington in NCAA women's basketball action on Saturday night at the CCAA/GNAC Challenge in Seattle. The Seawolves got 20 points from
Danae Wellander as they improve to 5-1 on the season. The Vikings fall to 2-6.
After a tough night on Friday, the Seawolves again came out shaky, trailing the Vikings by seven at the half, 28-21. Tonight, however, the Seawolves excelled in the second half. Trailing 40-31 with 13:00 to go, the Seawolves went on a 9-0 run to tie it. SSU then outscored the Vikings 31-9 the rest of the way to earn the win.
Wellander's 20 points came on 7-of-17 shooting. She also had nine rebounds and a couple of steals in a solid all-around performance.
Chelsey Armacost had 16 points and
Genny Anderson had ten rebounds.
Sonoma State shot 47.6% in the second half and held Western Washington to 32.7% shooting for the game.
It was SSU's first win over the Vikings in eleven all-time meetings.
The Seawolves will host Dominican on Wednesday, December 19th in a non-conference game.
