ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday in non-conference baseball action at Seawolf Diamond. SSU won game one 11-2, then fought for a 4-3 win in 10 innings in the nightcap. The victories complete a three-game sweep of the Otters as SSU improves to 3-0 on the season. CSUMB drops to 0-3.
Game one looked every bit the pitcher's duel for the first three and a half innings. Then, like they did in the season opener on Friday, Sonoma State erupted for a big inning. This time, instead of five runs, the Seawolf bats exploded for ten runs. SSU tacked another run on in the sixth before CSUMB finally got on the board, making it an 11-2 final.
B.J. Collom finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles. David Adler also doubled and drove in two while Tyler Wightman went 2-for-3. Brent Lysander was brilliant, tossing five innings of no-run, one-hit ball to earn the win.
In the nightcap, CSUMB scored in the first before SSU scored a pair on a Tyrese McDaniel two-run homer. The Otters tied it in the fifth, then went ahead 3-2 in the eighth inning of the game, scheduled originally for seven frames.
Down one, Jason Buhagiar hit a solo bomb to left center to tie the game back up at one. CSUMB had several solid opportunities to take the lead in extra innings, but they were done in by an excellent SSU defense, particularly a fantastic play to gun down a runner at home by Gino Lavezzo.
In the bottom of the tenth, McDaniel was walked, then lifted for pinch runner Derek Harms. After he moved to second on a walk by Lavezzo, Harms stole third, but the ball jutted away from the third baseman and Harms was able to scamper home for the game-winner. Paige Dumont pithced 2.2 solid innings of relief for the win.
SSU will continue non-conference play next Tuesday when they host San Francisco State.
