POMONA, Calif. - The Sonoma State women's water polo team defeated Iona 11-9 in the finale of the Lancer Invite hosted by Cal Baptist and Pomona-Pitzer Saturday afternoon.
Sonoma State (13-8) led the entire match, but Iona made it close in the second half. The Seawolves held a 7-3 advantage at the half, but the Gaels outscored SSU 4-1 in the third period to cut the lead to 8-7. Sonoma State squashed the rally in the fourth period as they outscored Iona 3-2 and won the match 11-9.
The Seawolves had another balanced attack with eight different players scoring.
Samantha Burchard, Roxanna McEwen and
Jenna Bole led the charge with two goals each.
Jessica Scott netted one goal and increased her tournament total to six to lead SSU.
Samantha Mullins, McEwen and Bole each scored five on the weekend.
Sonoma State improves to 13-8 on the season and has won 12 of its last 15 games after dropping five of its first six to begin the year.
The Seawolves take a break from tournament action next week as they play ony one game against No. 17 nationally ranked Santa Clara on March 17 at 1:00 pm in Santa Clara.
